What will happen to Elizabeth (Téa Leoni) in "Madam Secretary" season 3 if she turns down President Dalton's (Keith Carradine) offer to become his running mate in the upcoming presidential elections?

Viewers witnessed how surprised Elizabeth was with the proposal during the second season's finale. She never thought the POTUS had been thinking about getting her as his vice president. She was quite content in heading the State Department and happy that she was of service to him and his administration. As secretary of state, Elizabeth managed to pull off the most impossible tasks, from preventing a war to rescuing errant Americans trapped in foreign lands. She made Dalton the leader that he was and he knew it. Perhaps this is the reason why he wants her as his second-in-command, in the event that she agrees and wins at the polls.

Although Elizabeth could have said "yes" to Dalton right away, she told him she would have to think about it. She needs to discuss it with her husband Henry (Tim Daly) and her children. She also made it clear to the president that she was happy with her job as the State Secretary and did not wish to take on another role. Dalton was actually confident that she would accept the offer. He was already thinking of replacing her in her post. If Elizabeth decides that she does not want to become the VP, will she still be able to keep her old position? Or will she turn things around and give Dalton a run for his money?

Elizabeth could very well challenge Dalton in the presidential ticket if she wants to. Thanks to the media, her life, work and accomplishments have been laid bare for the public to see. The people know she is a capable public servant and she will be a great leader if given the chance. However, the probability of her running for the highest position is almost nil. She may or may not accept Dalton's offer, but it is highly unlikely she will want to become president soon. Perhaps, in the near future, she will change her mind.

Meanwhile, Leoni answered one of the fans' tweets regarding the season 3 filming schedule. According to her (as per CarterMatt), they will start production shoots in mid-July.

In the meantime, while waiting, fans may spend the time watching repeat episodes of the series on its new time slot on Sundays at 9 p.m. "Madam Secretary" will take over "The Good Wife's" slot when it returns in September.
