'Nashville' season 5 air date, spoilers, cast news: Bridgit Mendler, Jen Richards join cast

(Facebook/NashvilleABC)"Nashville" season 5 will premiere on Jan. 5 on CMT.

The cast of "Nashville" is going to get a lot bigger come season 5. Apart from the casting of Cameron Scoggins and Joseph David Jones, it has been revealed that two new girls are going to join the roster: Jen Richards and Bridgit Mendler.

As fans all know by now, "Nashville" was canceled by ABC after its fourth season, but CMT and Hulu came to the rescue. With season 5 a go, CMT has taken the liberty of announcing new cast members who will be joining the "Nashville" family.

Mendler has been cast in the role of Ashley Wilkenson, "a young, beautiful YouTube sensation who is about to record her first album." Her character is described as "self-assured, stubborn, and extremely talented, but behind her tough exterior is a well of vulnerability."

It is unknown how her inclusion in the upcoming season will impact the stories of the main characters. Could she be a new threat or a friend?

Mendler is known for her work on the Disney Channel, having a recurring role in "Wizards of Waverly Place" and a starring role in "Good Luck Charlie." She also starred in the Disney original film, "Lemonade Mouth." Most recently, she recurred in NBC's "Undateable."

Meanwhile, Richards will be portraying Allyson Del Lago, who is a physical therapist with a strong but compassionate persona. Allyson will be helping a main character overcome an arduous challenge.

It can be remembered that the season 4 finale saw Hayden Panettiere's Juliette Barnes getting on a plane that would eventually disappear. If her plane did crash, then it is likely that she will be Allyson's patient in the upcoming season. Despite this, there have been prior rumors that Juliette may be killed off.

Richards is the network's first transgender character and actor. She is known for her work in "Her Story," which earned her an Emmy Award nomination.

CMT has also released a teaser video of sorts on its Instagram page. "Nashville" season 5 will premiere on Jan. 5, Thursday, at 9 p.m. on CMT.
