'Nintendo NX' release date news: console set for release in July 2016; EA vague on supporting the 'NX'

The news that the Nintendo NX might be launched as early as next year has had some developers preparing for the release of the still unknown console. But Electronic Arts has opted for a more laidback, "wait and see" approach before assessing how the company can support Nintendo's new product.

The "Digitimes" site had earlier reported that Nintendo might commence with assembling the NX before the end of 2015 so it can be released next year. In line with this, the multinational company has reportedly distributed developer kits to video game studios who are interested in launching new games or making older games compatible to the console.

While it looks that the gaming industry is gearing up for the alleged launch of the Nintendo NX, EA doesn't appear to be too anxious to commit popular titles like "FIFA" and "The Sims" to the upcoming console. The move isn't too surprising, considering that the company has stopped supporting Nintendo's Wii U and the 3DS several years back after studies have shown that handheld consoles would soon give way to mobile gaming.

Andrew Wilson, EA's CEO, addressed the issue of the Nintendo NX during the just concluded earnings presentation to investors. The 41-year-old Wilson did not openly admit to EA supporting Nintendo once again, but he did underline the "tremendous relationship" the company had with Nintendo over the years.  He also said that EA "will evaluate any and all opportunities with them in the same way we do all platform opportunities,"

The decision to tread carefully can also be attributed to the trend of platforms like mobile devices and Smart TV being used for gaming too. And with these devices, the "refresh" cycles are shorter – just six months to the consoles' six years - so it's understandable why EA is not willing to expend too much money and effort in building games for every gaming platform that surfaces.

Nintendo officially announced the existence of the NX in March 2015. There's very little news regarding the console after that but it has been said that the NX will be a cross between a game console and a handheld device.

It hasn't been confirmed but reports have pegged the Nintendo NX's release date to be sometime in July 2016.
