'Pokémon Go' updates, release date: Challenging but exciting gameplay revealed by field testers; no release date yet

(The Pokemon Company)The augmented reality game is expected to be released later this year.

"Pokémon" fans are beyond excited that they will finally get to live out their dream of becoming a trainer and venture out into the real world in search for their very own Pokémon through "Pokémon Go." The augmented reality game from The Pokémon Company and Niantic is currently in development and will be released later this year.

Field testing for "Pokémon Go" started in Japan last March. Just recently, testing was also expanded to Australia and New Zealand. Feedback from testing will help improve the overall experience of "Pokémon Go" when it is releases.

While field testing is only available in three countries, thankfully, those lucky enough to have been part of the process have shared their experiences via the The Silph Road — an online community hosted on Reddit.

According to the forum, "Pokémon Go" will involve a certain level of strategy. The ability to capture Pokémon will depend on the strength of the Pokémon, the type of PokéBall used, and how well a player can toss the PokéBall. Wild Pokémon run around, too, so there is a chance that players might fail to capture them.

Based on their experiences, it will be difficult to find and capture some of the more popular creatures like Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Eevee. Players should also take into account the native environments of these creatures; for example, water-type creatures will naturally be found near lakes, oceans, or other bodies of water.

Aside from capturing Pokémon, players will also take part in battles. They will have to choose one of three teams — Red, Blue, and Yellow — and compete for ownership and prestige of Gyms. Gyms will be found in real-world locations and it will be the place where players can train their captured creatures. Battles are quick — 120 seconds maximum — but may result in injured Pokémon.

While "Pokémon Go" will be free to download for iOS and Android devices, the game will also have in-app purchases that will strengthen and boost a trainer's game experience. Special items like PokéBalls and healing potions will be available at PokéStops, which can be found on landmarks, museums, monuments, and other historical markers.

With new information revealed by field testers, "Pokémon Go" is shaping up to be a very challenging but exciting game that all "Pokémon" fans are sure to love. It should be noted, however, that gameplay will still likely undergo some changes before the official launch of the game.

"Pokémon Go" will be released later this year, but no official release date has been announced yet. Hopefully, more information will come to light in the coming months.
