'Reign' season 4 release date rumors: show returning January 2017?

(Facebook/cwreign)"Reign" season 4 is expected to premiere sometime January 2017.

The CW's "Reign" is one of the most debated shows on television these days as there have been reports suggesting that the fourth installment may be canceled due to a drop in ratings during the third season. However, new reports also point to a possible January 2017 release for the new episodes.

According to The Christian Times, "Reign" season four is looking to get back into small screens in the midseason. This only means the series will make a winter debut, most specifically sometime in January.

It's only reasonable that The CW did not schedule "Reign" for a fall 2016 premiere since there are other shows on the network that deliver good ratings such as "The 100" and "The Originals."

Some outlets think that The CW's decision to scrape "Reign" off the fall 2016 list is to keep competition down. Minus "iZombie" and other hit shows on the network, "Reign" might do much better and ratings will hopefully improve with an early 2017 release.

Though some fans have doubted a fourth installment for "Reign," it was confirmed early last month that filming has started for the new episodes. Through a tweet, the writers announced that season four is definitely on its way.

Meanwhile, viewers will finally get a detailed account of Mary's (Adelaide Kane) second marriage. It was announced in June that Will Kemp will be joining the cast of "Reign" as Lord Darnley.

In historical accounts of Queen Mary's time in power, Lord Darnley became her second husband. It has yet to be revealed how the two powers will come together and what good or bad Lord Darnley will bring to the Scots, but since Kemp has been cast for three episodes, fans can expect some romantic scenes between the two.

As for Torrance Coombs who plays Bash, fans won't see him anymore when the show returns. He is busy working on a new project under ABC, though there is speculation that he might make a comeback for a cameo role in the near future.

"Reign" season four's release date has yet to be announced by The CW.
