'Scandal' season 6 air date, spoilers: Mellie to lose chance to become the next U.S. president?

(Facebook/ScandalABC)Will Mellie be the next POTUS in "Scandal" season 6?

Mellie (Bellamy Young) may see her dream of becoming the next U.S. president shatter in front of her eyes in the upcoming season of "Scandal."

Executive producer Shonda Rhimes recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the new installment would kick start on the night of the presidential elections. She said that they chose to not dwell that much during the election process. This means that viewers will know right away whom the Americans have chosen between the Republican's Mellie and the Democrat's Frankie (Ricardo Chavira) to become their next leader. The newly elected vice president will also be announced. Will it be Jake (Scott Foley) or Cyrus (Jeff Perry)?

Although Mellie has started the elections on cloud nine, she is in for a rude awakening when she eventually learns that the other side has chosen Cyrus as their VP candidate. As Fitz's (Tony Goldwyn) former chief of staff, the man has proven that he was born a schemer. In fact, Frankie's ascent as the potential new head of state is Cyrus' own making. With his brilliant maneuver, he made the politician a person revered in the United States. Frankie will not be an easy rival. Mellie has her work cut out for her if she wants to become president.

Young told Variety in May that her character would learn about Cyrus' nomination in season 6. Right now, Mellie is secured in her faith that she will win the elections. The Americans once sympathized with her when they discovered that Fitz was having an affair behind the First Lady's back. Of course, Mellie does not need to explain to the public why Fitz's other woman is now serving as her campaign manager. She has set her eyes on the price. What could shake up Mellie's resolve is the knowledge that Cyrus would end up ruining her.

"I think that sends a chill through every spine in D.C. when that gets announced because Cyrus is such a monster and has the dirt on everyone and everyone knows that he's capable of anything. I think that is a deep, deep terror for everyone. Mellie doesn't know when we leave the finale, but it will shatter her. She's a little hubris about beating Vargas, but paired with Cyrus, all bets are off. It will really be bloodbath if we come back to an election in Season 6," the actress said.

"Scandal" season 6 is expected to premiere midseason 2017 on ABC.
