"Sherlock" season four and three have such a long interval in between that fans have started fearing that the show might already be cancelled. But while showrunner, Steven Moffat, has done his best to dismiss these rumors, he also admitted that the show has not started on creating a script yet, much more filming.

Moffat spoke with Collider about his two BBC shows, "Doctor Who" and "Sherlock." As the crime drama has the farthest release date of the two, the online publication — and likely most Sherlockians and Cumberbabies, too — were keen on knowing how far along the team of Moffat and Mark Gatiss are on the new season.

"Mark will be starting [writing scripts] very soon. He may have started. I've got to finish my 'Doctor Who' Christmas special, and then I'll be straight onto 'Sherlock' after that. We haven't started, but we've planned. We know what we're doing. Or we think we know what we think we're doing. There are a couple of things we've got lined up that are really quite strong surprises, but we'll see," he shared.

As to when shooting is going to start, the 53-year-old British showrunner revealed that it will be "April-ish." So to those hoping that the latest season will be bumped up, unfortunately, there just might be no hope for that at the moment.

Moffat also touched on the Christmas special. He admitted that women characters were a bit difficult to translate to the Victorian-set episode. He explained that when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote his female characters, they rarely — if never — spoke up. This proved a challenge, especially for Mrs. Hudson, who always had a playful banter with the boys, Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman).

Stay tuned for updates on the release dates of both "Sherlock" season four and the latest Christmas special.
