As television prepares for the big and final season of "The Vampire Diaries," recent reports suggest that Elena may be the only person who can get Damon out of the curse that he and Enzo are trapped in.

In the finale of season seven, viewers saw how Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) were possessed by some evil that caused them to start a dangerous killing spree. The murders will push through in "The Vampire Diaries" season eight, and based on the new set photos unveiled by the series, Stefan (Paul Wesley) will have a very hard time tracking his brother down.

Stefan will basically try to get his brother out of the trance, but the question is: Will brotherly love be enough to break the curse? This is where Elena (Nina Dobrev) can come into the picture.

Rumor has it that she may be the only way to get Damon out of his misery. As hinted by the set photos, it seems not even Stefan can get his brother back into the real world. If things keep going the way they are, Damon and Enzo may end up murdering everyone in the area and even in towns nearby.

While Elena could potentially be the key to breaking the curse, she's also helpless at the moment since she's in a deep sleep in the vault. On the other hand, fans should remember that Elena's life is linked to Bonnie's (Kat Graham) and if Bonnie dies, Elena gets resurrected.

Will Bonnie make the ultimate sacrifice for her best friend and let Elena live so Damon can be awakened from the madness?

There is a great chance that these things will take place in "The Vampire Diaries" season eight but the sad thing is, there's still no confirmation if Dobrev will return for the show's finale.

According to TV Line, The CW president Mark Pedowitz revealed in August that Dobrev is in talks for an appearance in the upcoming installment. "There are discussions going on with Nina. We'd love to have Nina back. She was great for The CW. She was integral for The Vampire Diaries," he shared.
