Despite receiving negative reviews for its fourth film, the sci-fi action series "Transformers" still remains a lucrative one for Paramount Pictures, with the film franchise being ranked as the 9th highest grossing one of all time. During its 2015 Q1 Earnings Conference Call, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner confirmed a fifth film, according to Gospel Herald. The film is expected to be released in 2017.

Based on the toys created by Hasbro and Tomy, the "Transformers" series is known for its stunning visual effects and action sequences. The first four movies were directed by Michael Bay, who finally announced in October 2014 that he was moving away from directing the giant robot series, but stay on as a producer, according to Comicbook.

In an article by Gospel Herald, Bay's protégée, Jonathan Liebsman, who directed the latest live-action adaptation of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," is rumored to be considered as Bay's replacement for the fifth film.

With critics continuing to slam the franchise, Paramount has now brought in Akiva Goldsman to lead a group of writers for creating a strategic plan for the fifth film, as well as the entire "Transformers" franchise, with the aim of creating a possible Transformers Cinematic Universe, similar to Marvel and the planned DCCU. According to Christian Today, Goldsman's roster of writers now include Robert Kirkman ("The Walking Dead"), Art Marcum and Matt Holloway ("Iron-Man"), Zak Penn ("Pacific Rim 2" and "X-Men: The Last Stand"), and Jeff Pickner ("Lost" and "Fringe").

In an interview with MTV, Mark Whalberg confirmed that he would be returning for the sequel and a possible third "Transformers" movie in the future. Whalberg had starred in "Transformers: Age of Extinction" as Cade Yeager, a single father and a struggling inventor.

There are also talks about a potential "Transformers" and "G.I. Joe" crossover project in the future. In a report by Fashion Times, producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura had said that both the franchises would first focus on their own storylines, but a crossover was a possibility. "I think later on that's a possibility but I don't think in the near future. If at some moment we all think 'You know what? It's time to bring the two of them together' we'll do that, but I think they're strong enough to exist on their own."
