'Frozen 2' update: will it escape the 'straight-to-video sequel' curse?

"Frozen 2" has no confirmed information attached to it except that it is being made. Because of the landslide success of "Frozen," Disney has a lot betting on this sequel. Will it escape the curse of the straight-to-video sequel?

"Frozen 2" had been plagued with a lot of rumours and speculations about plot but have not had any concrete confirmation from Disney. With the hype building up as early now, the question remains: will the sequel live up to its expectations?

Looking back at the history of Disney Princesses movies, most (all?) have not successfully come up with a sequel. In fact, Disney has resorted to packaging its Princess sequels straight to video. Cinderella, Ariel (of Little Mermaid), Belle (of Beauty and the Beast), and even Pocahontas have all suffered the same fate.

Moviepilot, however, thinks this may not be happening with the "Frozen" sequel, given how even now, "Let It Go" remains a very popular song amongst kids and Queen Elsa a popular costume choice, too. But that's actually where the problem lies for this movie. "Frozen" is now two years old and if there is ever a good time to strike with a follow-up, it would have been now, when kids are still remembering it.

With the sequel announced only earlier this year and no release date pinned to it yet, then "Frozen 2" cannot be expected in another one or two years (remember, "Frozen" was in development for at least two years before it was ready for release). By then, its current fanbase would have grown into their teenage years. While they may still go out and watch the film, perhaps for nostalgia's sake, who can tell if their passion for the sisters will remain the same?

Of course, there's always a way for Disney to avoid the pitfalls and make a successful follow-up. But it will truly be hard. Here's wishing they come up with a plot solid enough to span generations and a theme song that will be as endearing as "Let It Go."

Stay tuned for more news on "Frozen 2."
