'True Detective' season 3 news, release date: Cary Fukunaga won't return to direct

(Facebook/TrueDetective)"True Detective" has yet to be renewed for a season 3.

To this day, HBO has still not given "True Detective" a season 3 order despite the network's assurance that it is still highly invested in the series. Now, it has been revealed that even Cary Fukunaga won't be returning to direct.

It can be recalled that Fukunaga helmed the first season of the show, which went on to become critically acclaimed and commercially successful. On the other hand, the second season, which Fukunaga did not direct, did not meet the high expectations and standards of both viewers and critics alike. Now, Fukunaga himself has revealed that he has no plans to lend his directorial skills to the series at the moment.

"I had only signed on to do the first season because I wanted to do a long format, wanted to experiment in that genre. But I don't see myself going back to 'True Detective' anytime soon," Fukunaga told the Business Standard. "I feel like I have done the noir. There is no noir currently in my slate so if I ever get that itch again, may be. But not for now."

There has been some talk of HBO cancelling the show altogether due to the hit it took during its sophomore season run. However, it was previously reported that Casey Bloys, HBO programming president, fully intends to pick up the series.

"It is not dead," Bloys said. He added that both the series creator, Nic Pizzolatto, and the network are interested in making another season. However, until now, there has been no news of a third season being greenlighted.

It is also widely known that Pizzolatto's schedule is quite busy with some projects lined up, including one that involves "Iron Man" star Robert Downey Jr. For this reason, it may be impossible for Pizzolatto to return to the series, although Bloys maintains that the creator may still offer a hand in a supervisory role.

More news and updates should arrive soon.
