'Deadpool 2' news, release date: David Leitch officially announced as director

(Facebook/DeadpoolMovie)"Deadpool 2" has a new director, David Leitch.

It came as a surprise when it was revealed that Tim Miller and star Ryan Reynolds had a creative rift that culminated in the former's departure as director of the "Deadpool" sequel. But now, Fox has officially signed David Leitch to replace Miller in the director's seat.

It was previously reported that Leitch was being eyed as the new director of "Deadpool 2." Known for his work on "John Wick" and "The Coldest City," Leitch was reportedly included on the list of directors being considered at the time, with Drew Goddard ("The Cabin in the Woods") and Magnus Martens ("Marvel's Luke Cage") also on the list.

However, Leitch ultimately won the part, reports Variety. And while fans are certainly sad to see Miller go, it would be interesting to see what Leitch will bring to the table.

This slight bump in production, though, could mean that "Deadpool 2" may be delayed because Leitch has to start his own directorial process. It should be noted that Miller was the one who helmed the first "Deadpool" movie and many thought that it went without saying that he would return. Unfortunately, his creative differences with Reynolds caused him to step down. Reynolds, however, maintains that he is "sad to see him off the film."

Apart from that, The Hollywood Reporter states that a third film is already being worked on. Fox does not have a plot or storyline in mind for "Deadpool 3" yet, but it has been said that it will include X-Force.

So far, "Deadpool 2" does not have an official release date as Fox has yet to make any announcements. However, they did reveal premiere dates for untitled Marvel films, but Fox has other projects like "Gambit" and "New Mutants" currently in the works. The general concensus is that "Deadpool 2" will arrive in theaters in 2018, but the change in director may push the film back to 2019.
