'Marco Polo' season 3 release date: Speculations on the yet to be announced season of the show

(Facebook/Marco Polo)"Marco Polo" is said to be the most costly of all Netflix films, and the fate of the show's third season is still unknown.

There is still no confirmation on the renewal of "Marco Polo" for season 3 and, while others believe it will happen, some point out several reasons for the show to be canceled.

The second season, which aired last month, earned a lot of negative reviews and is said to have a decline in number of viewers. Because of the setting and the events the show features, the series is also said to be one of the most expensive productions of Netflix.

There are also reports that actor Benedict Wong no longer wants to reprise his role as Kublai Khan, who is one of the most important characters on the show.

"Marco Polo" has actor Lorenzo Richelmy in the titular role and the story is inspired by the early years of historical figure Marco Polo. The series revolves around his life during the reign of Kublai Khan, who ruled the Mongol Empire and founded the Yuan Dynasty.

Series creator John Fusco, however, may have debunked the rumors of cancellation and Wong's exit when he posted a picture on Twitter amid the rumors. He uploaded a shot showing Kublai Khan and Hundred Eyes (Tom Wu) with the caption, "We're not done, Monk. Me and you, we're not done."

Some also suggest that Wong is not actually leaving the show because of the reasons stated earlier here; instead, his appearance will be limited because of the storyline that will be featured in the next season.

While the show does not faithfully follow the events as depicted in history, The Wrap pointed out that the season 2 finale seems to be hinting at the upcoming battle between Prester John (Tom Savini) and Kublai Khan with the former winning the battle and eventually getting to be featured more. Prester John has been mentioned in Marco Polo's books and is considered to be a mythical Christian warrior.

Netflix has yet to announce the renewal or cancellation of the show.
