'Rain World' release date, news: Protagonist uses wit to survive the harsh ecosystem

The gaming market is dominated by mostly role-playing and action games packed with visually tantalizing computer-generated imagery and complicated storylines. Videocult, in partnership with Adult Swim Games, is deviating from that trend and has created an addictive puzzle-like game set in a 2D environment known as "Rain World."
In the diverse ecosystem of "Rain World," the player controls a tiny animal called a "Slugcat" who traverses industrial ruins that are inhabited by smaller prey and vicious predators that lurk in every corner. If that's not enough, the sudden downpour of rain is heavy enough to cause floods and anything out in the open is crushed by it.
The main goal of the game is to survive while trying to hunt for food and escaping the claws of other critters that see slugcats as delicious food. The slugcat is outpowered by a lot of creatures, but never outthought, which is why the player needs to rely on a strong sense of observation and wit.

Videocult artist and programmer Joar Jakobsson talks more about "Rain World's" ecosystem and order of hunting. He explains that the different life forms in the game are independent of the player, and can very much think for themselves while remembering the gamer's actions. He points out that this is the defining point of the game that separates it from other puzzle-type 2D platformers.
"The mighty vultures swooping down from above are fierce hunters of both lizards and slugcats, but they're not mindless machines — if you wrong one it may decide to track you specifically and you'll never again be able to pass under open sky without an anxious eye upwards," Jakobsson explains. When you save one from another predator, however, the slugcat makes allies, making the gameplay deeper.
The team only aimed for $25,000, but the overwhelming support from fans via Kickstarter amassed a total of $63,255 pledges from 3,030 backers. This just shows the interest in the game's development.
"Rain World" arrives on the PlayStation 4 and Steam platforms within 2017.
