'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' season 3 update: references to existing movies and 'Captain America: Civil War'; Marvel Cinematic Universe Easter eggs

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." didn't instantly hit it off with viewers, especially with Marvel fans. But during the latter half of season one and rolling into the next two seasons, the show has captured the attention of many — especially those looking at catching up with the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. If season one set the stage for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," seasons two and three is paving the way for "Captain America: Civil War" and all the other incoming Marvel movies. For those who have been looking closely, some nice Easter eggs have already been dropped this season.

One of the most obvious Ester eggs will of course be Skye embracing her real name, Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet). Finally, viewers get to rest easy knowing which comic book character she is actually representing. Looping back to comic books, new Inhuman characters have also been introduced, Lash being the most notable of them, given that character has just been introduced in the new "Inhuman" comic book series. This shows just how serious Marvel is in closely tying all of its platforms together.

The show started laying grounds for "Civil War" as early as the pilot, showcasing a different agency — government-employed, no less — hunting down the Inhumans. While that is an obvious foreshadowing of the latest Captain America movie, Elliot Randolph's (Peter MacNiol) re-emergence is a subtle one. An Asgardian that everyone first saw in season one, Elliot admitted to wanting a low-key life to avoid government intrusion. It links to how some superheroes are torn about the government stepping in about handling people with power.

There have also been several references already to existing Marvel movies. In episode one alone, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Ant-Man" have been mentioned. The characters referenced falling cities from the sky and a failed theory about Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) shrinking to a teeny-tiny person.

As "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." season three progresses, more Easter eggs and loop-backs to "Captain America: Civil War" are expected to appear. The show airs on ABC every Tuesday night. "Captain America: Civil War" drops in theatres next year, May 6, 2016.
