'American Gods' release date, plot, latest news: Gaiman adds Vulcan as character on the TV series

Starz has revealed Vulcan, one of the gods in the upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman's 2001 novel "American Gods." The god of weaponry, fire, and volcanoes will be played by actor Corbin Bernsen who was also seen on other TV series such as "Pysch" and "L.A. Law."
"Vulcan's the god of the volcano and the forge, and what is the modern-day extrapolation of what that god could do?" co-executive producer Bryan Fuller said in an Entertainment Weekly article. "We started talking about America's obsession with guns and gun control and, really, if you're holding a gun in your hand, it's a mini volcano, and perhaps, through this character, there's a conversation to be had."
Vulcan was not part of Gaiman's original novel, but Gaiman himself is said to have made the addition when the author came in to write an episode for the network. In the same article, Michael Green, co-executive producer of the show, elaborated on Vulcan as a character, saying, "He's a brand-new addition who came from an experience Neil had. He was going through a small town in Alabama where he saw a statue of Vulcan."
"It was a steel town and, as he told the story, there was a factory that had a series of accidents where people were killed on the job and they kept happening because an actuarial had done the numbers and realized that it was cheaper to pay out the damages to the families of people who lost people, rather than to shut down the factory long enough to repair, and that occurred to him as modern a definition of sacrifice as there might be," Green added.
The upcoming TV series will follow the lives of gods as they walk the earth like humans do simply because humankind's faith in them has allowed them to manifest. The present time, however, poses as a challenge to these gods who need to fight in order to get the attention of human believers who have been consumed by modern-day gods such as the Internet and television.
The main protagonist on the series is Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), a known ex-convict who becomes the travelling partner of Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane). Mr. Wednesday poses as a conman, but, in reality, he is one of the older gods attempting to unite forces in order to combat the new deities.
Other characters who will appear on the series according to sources include Laura Moon (Emily Browning), Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber), Bilquis (Yetide Badaki), Technical Boy (Bruce Langley), Low Key Lyesmith (Jonathan Tucker), Mr. World (Crispin Glover), Media (Gillian Anderson), Czernobog (Peter Stormare), Mr. Nancy (Orlando Jones), Mr. Ibis (Demore Barnes), Easter (Kristin Chenoweth), and Zorya Vechernyaya (Cloris Leachman).
"American Gods" is expected to premiere in April 2017 on Starz.
