The Android L beta for Nexus 5 and 7 arrives today as per the announcement made on Day One of Google I/O 2014.

The beta version is an initiative by Google to allow developers to try the new Android L platform ahead of its consumer release later this year.

While Google is not entirely opening the platform, they are sharing early builds with Android developers.

The tech giant also did not confirm Android L release device compatibility other than the beta testing for Nexus 5 and Nexus 7.

At this stage, developers will already have a feel of the new version of Android to help them start programming and the design changes that they need to integrate with their apps.

Google Director of Engineering, Dave Burke did not unravel all features of Android L, but highlighted the new "personal login feature" that obviously plays on Apple's built-in fingerprint scanning technology.

Instead of using a pattern or a PIN to login, your phone will first try to sense if you are in a trusted environment by searching for your smartwatch or WiFi network.

If it sees any of these, you will not be required to authenticate and will be redirected to the basic lock screen, otherwise, you will be asked for the pattern or PIN to unlock your smartphone.

Meanwhile, Google has provided developers with preview of what to expect of Android L including a new UI design aligned with new Google-wide standard, a new Runtime to be able to test the apps and get them ready for the default Android Runtime (ART), more control over the appearance of the notifications and more control over resource usage via Project Volta.

Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 users who can't wait any longer for the release can check this site.

However, you are advised to use another device when testing Android L beta to avoid instability issues and apps problems that usually arise during this stage.
