Cleveland Cavaliers free agency, trade rumors 2016: Ray Allen to improve champs' roster?

One of the prominent players that made noise in free agency and off-season was Ray Allen who revealed that he is mulling a comeback after sitting out the last two seasons. A few teams were linked to him but now there is a possibility of joining the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers are the defending champions and Allen is one of the greatest shooters of all time. Together, it could be a match made in heaven.

Allen's ability to hit from long range gives the Cavs a legitimate threat from the outside. This also improves their overall offense since it will allow them to space the floor better leading to numerous scoring opportunities.

Aside from these, Allen adds depth at the shooting guard position which is something Cleveland may need with J.R. Smith still unsigned. The 41-year-old could be one of the leaders and motivators in the team as well.

If Allen becomes a Cavalier, it is expected for him to have the reserve role, a duty he already had during his two-season run with the Miami Heat which led to one championship.

Allen will be a crucial second unit piece and his experience may help his fellow bench players have composure while the starters are resting.

Undoubtedly, Allen is a key player for any organization he joins, especially the Cavaliers, who have all the momentum coming off a triumphant title bid. But for now, the latter might be focused on keeping Smith, who is yet to have a new contract and remains available on the free agency market.

It is expected that once this is addressed, the Cavs will have the time to seek for guys they can acquire to boost their roster.

The title defense for the Cavaliers begins on Oct. 25 when they host the New York Knicks.
