The Cleveland Cavaliers might be retooling ahead of their title defense as they are reportedly open to trading Iman Shumpert, most likely to the Minnesota Timberwolves who have already asked about the guard.

This is not Shumpert's debut in the rumor mill. He was connected to some teams before but during that time, the Cavs showed zero interest in dealing him away since they had yet to sign J.R. Smith.

But after recently agreeing to a deal with Smith, it seems the Cavaliers are now willing to part ways with Shumpert.

Last season, Shumpert was limited to only 54 games in the regular season and this led to his offensive production going downhill, although his defensive ability remains his best asset and is believed as the main reason why the Timberwolves inquired about his availability.

The Wolves have a core which boasts talented youngsters who can light it up on the offensive end. However, they need improvements on defense and Shumpert could be among those.

As of the moment, Shumpert is still with the Cavs and it is uncertain if they truly have the desire to bid him farewell. Aside from franchise superstar LeBron James, he is one of the best defenders for the reigning champions. He might be a crucial piece for them to successfully keep the title in the 2016-17 season.

If ever a Shumpert deal is pursued by the Cavaliers and Timberwolves, it can be expected that the former will seek for big men from the latter.

In the off-season, the Cavs were thought to be searching for someone who will improve their defense in the paint, particularly a rim protector. The Wolves can put up a package deal for Shumpert that would include a center or power forward, plus a role player to replace him in "The Land." A prodigy is unlikely to be added because the franchise is relying heavily on its youngbloods.
