Cleveland Cavaliers trade rumors 2016: Ricky Rubio to add depth as point guard?

The reigning National Basketball Association (NBA) champions, the Cleveland Cavaliers, still look like title contenders even if they have not made drastic roster changes so far. But a possible issue for them in the future is point guard depth and a player who can help them with that is the Minnesota Timberwolves' Ricky Rubio.

Looking at Cleveland's current squad, there are three point guards in Kyrie Irving, Mo Williams and Kay Felder.

Three playmakers are enough for any team, but recently, Williams was reported to be having plans of retiring ahead of the 2016-17 season. If this happens, the Cavs will be left with Irving and Felder.

Irving will surely be the starter and following a successful season, he is expected to have another great run in their new campaign. Felder is going to be his backup, and even though he has great potential, since he is a rookie, there will surely be concerns.

That is why depth at the no. 1 position could trouble the Cavs if they fail to do something about it. Searching on the free agency market may work for them, but the best option might be to trade for one more point guard and Rubio could be their guy.

Because the Wolves selected former Providence playmaker Kris Dunn fifth overall in this year's draft, Rubio was dragged to the rumor mill. This despite the fact that the franchise expressed no desire in dealing the Spanish star away.

If the Cavaliers target and succeed in acquiring Rubio, they will have a backup for Irving, who is also capable of taking the starting duties. This gives them a dangerous group of backcourt players that will feature the two at no. 1 and the likes of J.R. Smith and Mike Dunleavy Jr. at the no. 2 position.

But trading for Rubio might require a huge sacrifice since he still has three years left in his existing pact with the Wolves.
