When "Elementary" returns for its fifth season on CBS, characters — both old and new — will be featured. It has been revealed that Virginia Madsen and Nelsan Ellis are set to join the cast this coming season.

It was exclusively reported by Entertainment Weekly in a Spoiler Room issue that Madsen would reprise her role as Paige, Gregson's (Aidan Quinn) love interest on the series. Paige will appear in episode 3 and executive producer Rob Doherty revealed that the couple's relationship will grow in the upcoming season.

Fans can recall that Paige and Gregon previously sparked a relationship. There were a few bumps in the road for them, which led to a momentary breakup. However, after a series of events, the couple got back together.

As for Ellis, he will be bringing Shinwell Johnson to life for three episodes. Shinwell was a character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and was introduced in the author's story, "The Illustrious Client."

For "Elementary," Shinwell will take a modern spin, becoming a former drug dealer who served his time in jail. Newly reformed, the character will help Sherlock and Joan in a murder investigation through the use of his past connections in the underworld. Joan and Shinwell have previously met after the former operated on the latter over a decade ago. However, there's a lingering possibility of Shinwell changing back to his old self and reverting to his old ways.

Filming for season 5 is already underway. Actor Jonny Lee Miller, who plays the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, shared snaps of his time in production on his Instagram page. One photo sees Miller and Lucy Liu, who plays Joan Watson, reunited on set. Other photos tease a scene on the 51st floor of a building overlooking a beautiful city skyline and Miller getting hit by a car.

"Elementary" season 5 will premiere on Oct. 2, Sunday, at 10/9c on CBS.
