'Empire' season 3 spoilers, news: Cookie moves on from Lucious; Mariah Carey finally guest stars

(Facebook/EmpireFOX)Cookie will try to move on from Lucious in season 3.

A heartbroken Cookie told her sons at the end of "Empire" season 2 that she and their father are through, and it appears that she will make good on that promise. What does this mean for the Lyons and their empire?

For a moment there, all was right in the Lyons family. The family rallied together and Lucious (Terrence Howard) and Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) grew closer again. So much so that fans were already anticipating a romantic reconciliation between the two. But Lucious had to ruin everything by marrying Anika (Grace Gealey) so she won't be forced to testify against him. While Cookie knows the reason behind the sham wedding, it doesn't mean she's okay with it.

"Empire" showrunner Ilene Chaiken told reporters during the Television Critics Association press tour that season 3 will find Cookie trying to leave Lucious.

"She's going to try to move on," Chaiken explained. "She's fighting for her life. She's fighting for her opportunity to start over."

Perhaps the arrival of a new love will help her move on. TV Line confirmed that Taye Diggs' character, Angelo Dubois, will be the love interest for Cookie. A politician from a rich and powerful family, Dubois' story arc will reportedly start with Jamal before intersecting with Cookie's.

Cookie's children will also have big story arcs in season 3. Andre (Trai Byers) will reportedly be going on this big journey that will result in a major plotline for the character. Jamal (Jussie Smollett) will still be recovering from the physical trauma of taking a bullet for his father as well as dealing with the emotional trauma of everything that happened in the finale. Meanwhile, Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) will be struggling to move on from Laura's (Jamila Velazquez) rejection and the revelation that Anika is carrying his baby.

But that's not all that fans can look forward to in season 3 as "Empire" will once again feature some heavyweight guest stars. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mariah Carey is set to appear as Kitty, a renowned diva who will be working with Jamal on a new song. The songstress will reportedly help Jamal reach a breakthrough both in his personal life and his music career.

The premiere episode of "Empire" season 3 will air on Fox on Sept. 21 at 9 p.m.
