The indie hit "Five Nights at Freddy's" was released more than a year ago in August 2014. Since its debut on digital distribution service Desura, hardcore gamers have been trying to piece together the lore behind the game and according to game developer Scott Cawthon, fans have come close to uncovering details about the creepy truth behind the game.

Last August, Cawthon updated the "FNaF" community about the lore behind the game. In his post on Steam's community page, he applauded efforts of several gamers who have almost hit the mystery right on the head. Amongst the most prolific theorists is MatPat from Game Theory.

In the same post, however, the creator expressed his confusion over the community not being able to uncover the mysteries of the latest title in the franchise, "Five Nights at Freddy's 4." He clarified that the most recent game is not a hodge podge of random references and there is a definite story behind it. He further explained that the mystery remaining elusive might just be the most fitting ending to the game series.

"The fact that the pieces have remained elusive this time strikes me as incredible, and special, a fitting conclusion in some ways, and because of that, I've decided that maybe some things are best left forgotten, forever," said Cawthon.

Undeterred, MatPat of Game Theory has since released another video on his official YouTube page trying to unravel the secrets of "Five Nights at Freddy's 4." In the update released a mere month ago, MatPat claims that most of "FNaF 4" tells stories related to Boogeyman myths from across the globe.

"By comparing real life Boogeyman myths from around the world to the franchise, he is going to see if he can solve the FNAF mystery ... and win a little respect from the FNAF theorist community," detailed MatPat in his YouTube post.

Cawthon has neither denied nor confirmed the YouTube theorist's new claims.
