Disney has confirmed earlier this year that "Frozen 2" is officially happening. While the announcement comes as no surprise considering the critical and commercial success the first film received, fans are nonetheless very excited about the release of the upcoming sequel, with some going so far as speculating on what adventures the return of Anna and Elsa would see.

Thankfully, earlier this August, the movie's directors finally spilled some details about "Frozen 2."

"Frozen," which premiered two years ago in 2013, is a 3D animated film inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, "The Snow Queen." It follows two sisters, Elsa and Anna, as they deal with the aftermath of their parents' passing and Elsa's eventual ascendance to the throne, further complicated by Elsa's hidden powers — controlling ice.

The movie ultimately earned more than $1 billion worldwide and has since held the title of Walt Disney Picture's highest grossing release of all time. "Frozen" has since spawned a short film, a Broadway production, a theme park and several videogame adaptations.

Last March, during Walt Disney Co.'s annual shareholders meeting, John Lasseter, chief creative officer at Disney, announced that a sequel for "Frozen" will soon be in the works. While no details about the plot have been confirmed, Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, the film's directors, have given little hints on what fans can expect from the upcoming sequel.

In an interview with MTV, Buck explained that the production is very much in tune with what is happening with society and they intend for "Frozen 2" to have a clear and positive message for the kids who would be seeing it. He said:

"I think we're very aware of what is happening in society. I don't think any of us take [them] lightly, even though they can be very funny and entertaining, the messages that our movies have and the influence they can have on young people. When the kids [watch] them, they watch them over and over again, and if we don't have a decent message in there, I think we've missed an opportunity."

No word yet on when"Frozen 2" would debut, however, "Frozen" on Blu-ray was made available just this month.
