Golden State Warriors free agency, trade rumors 2016: Anderson Varejão staying for another season

Veteran center Anderson Varejão will continue chasing a championship ring with the Golden State Warriors after reportedly reaching an agreement with the team for a one-year deal.

Last February, Varejão ended his tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers and was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. The Blazers, upon receiving the Brazilian big man, decided to waive him.

As a free agent, Varejão found himself a new home a few days after and signed with the Warriors.

For Golden State, Varejão saw action in 22 games as a reserve and averaged 2.6 points with 2.3 rebounds in 8.5 minutes per outing. The 33-year-old's numbers dipped during the Dubs' playoff run. In 17 postseason appearances, he recorded 1.2 points and 1.2 rebounds in 5.5 minutes per game.

Keeping Varejão is now a necessity for the Warriors after three centers who were part of the 2014-15 championship squad left this off-season. Starter Andrew Bogut was traded to the Dallas Mavericks to clear some cap space for the signing of Kevin Durant. Reserves Festus Ezeli (Blazers) and Marreese Speights (Los Angeles Clippers) signed with different teams in free agency.

Joining Varejão now at the no. 5 position for the Dubs is fellow veteran Zaza Pachulia.

Despite staying, Varejão is expected to keep the backup role with Pachulia likely getting the starting nod, unless the Warriors continue searching for another center and lands a big name this off-season, which is unlikely with only a few players left on the free agency market.

The Warriors are busy making moves this off-season after failing to become back-to-back champs last season. Along with the impending re-signing of Varejão, they added Durant, which was the biggest move this free agency, and another veteran in David West.

Unfortunately, good roster adjustments like the ones mentioned entail sacrifices and the Dubs needed to part ways with some key pieces.
