HTC One (M8) vs. Moto X 2014: Metal HTC flagship versus the customizable Moto X 2014

Last year, there were only a few smartphones which were able stand up to the HTC One (M8) and the Moto X 2014 was one of them. Here is how these two devices, which make great options for those looking for budget smartphones, compare.

Design

In terms of premium design, the One (M8) is a winner as it has a unibody aluminum shell with rounded edges and is one of the best looking devices from last year. However, its metal build makes its heavier than the Moto X which is mostly made of plastic.

The Moto X can also be fully customized on the Moto Maker website. Potential users can choose the colors they want for the front and even outfit the back panel with leather, wood or plastic. However, irrespective of design, the device comes wrapped in a metal band around its edge.

When it comes to colors, the Moto X provides more options, while the One (M8) is only available in silver, gold and metal.

Display

The display on the Moto X is marginally bigger than the one on its competitor. It comes with an AMOLED screen measuring 5.2 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a density of 424 pixels per inch. As for the device from HTC, it comes with a Super LCD3 screen measuring 5.0 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a density of 441 pixels per inch.

Specs

Since both these devices were released last year, their hardware have a lot of similarities. The One (M8) comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, coupled along with a Krait 400 CPU with four cores clocked at 2.3 GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU. The Moto X, comes equipped with a different version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, a Krait 400 CPU with four cores and an Adreno 330 GPU.

Memory

The One (M8) is superior to the Moto X in this category as it has a memory slot which allows for the addition of up to 128 GB of external storage. The Moto X, on the other hand, does not have a slot. As for the RAM, each device has 2 GB onboard.

Price

The HTC One (M8) costs $199 with a two-year contract while the second generation Moto X costs $99 with a similar contract.
