iPad Air 3 release date, specs and features: Tablet to hit markets in 2017?

(Apple)The iPad Air 3 is the rumored follow-up to the iPad Air 2 (pictured).

Apple's rumored iPad Air 3 has been through a lot — from cancellation rumors to being the last-ever iteration in the lineup. But an ongoing speculation about the device has to do with its release date. Many reports initially believed that the tablet would go on sale in November. However, new reports are now saying that it could be postponed to next year.

It was previously reported that the iPad Air 3 was the subject of cancellation talks, owing it to assumptions that it could be replaced with the iPad Pro lineup. Then came reports of the tablet being unveiled in October and being released in the market a month after that. This assumption was based on Apple's historical releasing pattern.

However, according to other reports, it seems likely that the iPad Air 3's release could be delayed well into 2017. This is mainly because another iPad, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, was just put out in March earlier this year. Apparently, it does not seem likely that Apple would release another tablet in the same year. Additionally, there are talks that the company is pouring all its attention and efforts on the next generation of the iPad Pro.

Regardless, it should be noted that the iPad Air 2, the predecessor of the rumored upcoming tablet, has gone on sale on eBay. Originally selling for $399.99, a whopping $100 has been slashed off the price. Generally, a drop in retail price usually means that sellers are preparing for the release of the next generation in the lineup. However, it does not guarantee the iPad Air 3's existence and eventual release.

As for its speculated specifications, it is widely believed that the tablet could be the thinnest one yet. It will reportedly have a Smart Connector and will have an aluminum chassis. Three storage options are expected: 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB. Its chipset remains on the fence, with reports debating over an A10 one or an A9X one. However, the device is said to run on iOS 10 out of the box.

Since Apple has not yet spoken out about the rumors, tech enthusiasts should take this news with a grain of salt.
