LG G4 release date, specs, rumors: 4,000 LG fans invited to test drive next-gen handset free ahead of April 28 launch
Just a day after releasing a new teaser clip ahead of the official unveiling of the LG G4 smartphone in New York City on April 28, LG has now announced that it will give away its upcoming next-gen handset to 4,000 lucky consumers across 15 countries.
LG had made an announcement at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2015) last month about its plans to release two premium devices this year, out of which one was believed to be the LG G4. Since then, there have been leaks and speculations about the LG G4, though the company never officially confirmed any of the rumors.
Based on earlier rumors, the LG G4 is expected to feature a curved 5.3-inch sapphire Quad-HD display running on Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 810 system on a chip, along with 3GB of RAM. The LG G4 has been expected to come with a 16MP camera, a microSD card reader, and run on Android Lollipop 5.0.2 or 5.1.
Other media reports have suggested that LG is likely to avoid using the Snapdragon 810 system in the LG G4, as Qualcomm has not yet addressed the overheating issue of the SoC model. Instead, the LG G4 would be powered by the SnapDragon 808 SoC model featuring a dual-core ARM Cortex A57 CPU and a Quad-Core A53 CPU. The SnapDragon 808 also features an Adreno 418 GPU and is based on 20nm process technology, with the chipset supporting 64 bit computing and 4G connectivity.
The latest teaser video released by LG did not give away any details about its upcoming next-gen handset, but played on the theme of better night shooting, indicating that the LG G4 may very well have a camera boasting an f1.8 aperture. The video also showed the rear silhouette of the LG G4 and confirms the official launch date of April 28 for the handset.
The LG G4 will compete with the Galaxy high-end devices to be rolled out by LG's biggest market rival Samsung, from April 10 onwards. This seems to have made LG come up with its new "customer experience campaign" where it will give away 4,000 units of LG G4 to consumers in 15 countries to test drive the handset for up to 30 days.
The campaign has been already kicked off in several locations throughout the world, including South Korea, Canada, China, Brazil, German, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Turkey, UK, and the US. All participating countries will run their own social media campaign inviting the public to express their interest on why they deserve a free LG G4. The winners who will be selected based on their "entry responses" will then get to try out the G4 for up to 30 days and given "assignments" to complete during their experience.
The LG G4 will reportedly be launched in Europe and the U.S., but will not be available in China. LG aims to sell 10 million LG G4 handsets and the accelerated April release date means that the handset could make its global debut in May and become available with all major U.S. carriers.
