'Logan' spoilers, release date: 'Logan' set in a 'slightly different universe' says Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold

In the upcoming standalone "Logan" film starring Hugh Jackman as the titular character, fans can expect to see a few "X-Men" references. Film director James Mangold revealed that these details connect the film to other "X-Men" movies.

(Facebook/TheWolverineMovie)"Logan" premieres in theaters on March 3.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Mangold and Jackman expressed that the film is set in a different timeline and it carries a far different tone from the rest of the movies. Mangold pointed out that the film feels like it is set in a slightly different universe from the "X-Men" simply because it does not make direct references to the movies in the franchise, and more importantly because "Logan" is set in the future, a timeline that has not been covered by the "X-Men" movies.

The film is set in 2029, when the world is seeing a rapid decline of mutant births. The titular character will be helping out a young mutant called Laura Kinney (Dafne Keen), who is being chased by an evil organization. When Wolverine meets Laura, he learns that she possesses his mutant abilities. Eventually, he finds out that the young mutant was cloned using his DNA. Therefore, Laura is Wolverine's female clone.

According to Jackman, "Logan" will be the last film he will star in as the mutant X-Men member Wolverine. And because it was going to be his last, the production team gave him an opportunity to take part in the development of the movie.

"I said this was my last one and they said make the movie you want to make," he said. "And so Jim and I had this blank canvas and we wanted to make something really different. Definitely tonally different, I kept thinking 'The Wrestler,' 'Unforgiven.'"

Although Jackman has admitted that "Logan" will be his last film as Wolverine, a bunch of reports placing him in an upcoming" Deadpool" movie with Ryan Reynolds have also been circulating. So far, Mangold, Jackman, and Reynolds have denied the latest claims.

"Logan" will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on Feb. 19, but it will premiere in theatres on March 3.
