Marvel's next Thor is a woman: Reasons behind the shocking twist

Marvel will welcome a brand new female superheroine that will emerge as the new Thor this October.

In what could be the most surprising twist in comics history in the recent past, Marvel Comics will introduce a change into the "big three" (Captain America, Iron Man and Thor) where the classic Thunder God will be replaced by a woman starting this October and moving forward.

Early reactions were mostly negative.

However, Marvel has a good explanation as to the incarnation of the Thunder God as a woman, and this involves the power of the hammer, Mjolnir, and not Thor himself.

"The inscription on Thor's hammer reads 'Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.' Well it's time to update that inscription," says Marvel editor Wil Moss. "The new Thor continues Marvel's proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute - she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!"

Thor writer Jason Aaron also stresses:

"This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it's unlike any Thor we've ever seen before."

The exciting part here is the part where everyone will discover how the female version was able to lift up the hammer and become "worthy" of it.

While the negative comments are inevitable, rebellious fanboys need to be reminded that Thor's power is with the hammer, and not his.

Odin, Thor's father, stripped him of his power for violating his commands, and therefore enshrined all of it to Mjolnir.

Perhaps, another glaring issue would be – will Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, be substituted by a female character in The Avengers Movie?

This and many other questions will surely bombard the Marvel panel in the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con International 2014.

The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron will hit the theaters in 2015.
