Microsoft Surface Mini rumors roundup – Myth or reality?

Is it really possible to have a Surface Mini?

News about the possibility of Microsoft introducing a Surface Mini in the market is quite confusing. Certain reports indicate that creating a smaller Surface isn't logical since the company has suffered losses during the second quarter of 2014 after a 50 percent increase in revenue during the first quarter.

The company then admitted that it has axed the idea of a Surface Mini.

However, talks about it persisted especially after a small gathering organized by Microsoft in May. This raised suspicions about the Surface Mini but it turned out to be the unveiling of the Surface Pro 3.

But according to one source, journalist Brad Sams, claimed that there is, indeed, a Surface Mini, and that he's seen it. He says it looks like a smaller Surface Pro 3. Reports say that the Surface Mini is powered by Windows RT and has a 1GB of RAM. Sams said he's also tested the device but refused to give photographs.

Reports from various sources, however, contradict this claim. A Bloomberg report said that the company cancelled the tablet reveal at the last minute, and that it's a decision by CEO Satya Nadella and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop.

DigiTimes also published a report in June that said Microsoft cancelled production indefinitely. It was supposed to start production in May 2014 but the company hit the Stop button, thinking that there are too many 7-to-8-inch tablets in the market already.

But does this mean it's impossible to see a Surface Mini in stores?

Maybe not. If production has been cancelled indefinitely, there could still be a chance that it pushes through, especially since there are references available on the Surface Pro 3 guide.

Paul Thurrot, creator of Supersite for Windows, tweeted "there are Surface Mini references all over the Surface Pro 3 User Guide. Hilarious."

If you're one of those who pray hard for the Surface Mini to become a reality, this should be good news.
