The mega hit sandbox game Minecraft is headed to Windows Phone, as confirmed by Mojang lead developer Jens Bergensten via a Twitter update.

"Yes, Minecraft: Pocket Edition *is* coming to the Windows Phone! The port runs already, but there's still much to do before any release," he tweeted.

But, even before this confirmation, lead Mojang developer for the Pocket Edition has used the microblogging site to tease fans of the upcoming Windows Phone release.

"The port is in the first stages though. It's kind of slow now and needs optimization, so in full Mojang style the release date is 'soon'™," Tommaso Checchi wrote in his tweet.

Checchi also denied that Microsoft forced them to come up with the Windows Phone Pocket Edition.

He added, "And nobody forced/threatened us if you're wondering! Actually, we started before the whole Microsoft thing :)"

Currently, there is no confirmed release date of Minecraft for Windows Phone.

In September, Microsoft Corp. revealed that the company has agreed to purchase Mojang, creators of Minecraft, for the sum of $2.5 billion.

"Minecraft is more than a great game franchise – it is an open world platform, driven by a vibrant community we care deeply about, and rich with new opportunities for that community and for Microsoft," said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

This acquisition will allow Microsoft to expand its horizon within the mobile gaming realm.

Mojang joins Microsoft Studios, the team that has produced such iconic franchises as Forza Horizon, Halo and Fable.

A bigger Minecraft world is already available on next-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One.

Mojang has revealed that Minecraft: PS Vita Edition will be released on Oct. 14.
