Motorola Moto X (3rd-Gen) release date, specs, rumors: 5.2 QHD display and Snapdragon 810 SoC confirmed in leak

The second-generation Moto X is now almost eight months old and Motorola has been widely expected to release its successor, dubbed Moto X 3rd Gen, sometime later this year. Recently, a leaked specs sheet followed by a video had provided complete technical details of the upcoming third generation Moto X, which was reported to feature a 5.64-inch QHD (1440x2560 pixels) resolution display and run on a Snapdragon 808 processor paired with 3GB RAM.

But new screenshots containing the hardware details of the Moto X (3rd Gen) bearing model number XT1542 have just been leaked, revealing that the new Moto X will feature a 5.2-inch 1440 x 2560p AMOLED display and will be powered by a Snapdragon 810 processor paired with 4GB RAM.

The information about Motorola replacing the Snapdragon 808 chip with the Snapdragon 810 processor in the Moto X (3rd-Gen) is significant because it could make a difference in the handset's performance. Both the chipsets support 64-bit computing, but the Snapdragon 810 is an octa-core processor with quad-core ARM Cortex A57 and quad-core A53, while the Snapdragon 808 consists of six cores with dual-core ARM cortex-A57 and quad-core A53. It may be recalled that Qualcomm had earlier been at the receiving end for overheating problems of its Snapdragon 810 processor.

Samsung had decided to switch from using the Snapdragon 810 in its Galaxy S6 flagship to its homegrown Exynos chipset after discovering that Qualcomm's chip was overheating. LG also avoided using the Snapdragon 810 system in its flagship G4, which is powered by a Snapdragon 64-bit hexacore 808 processor. Qualcomm has, however, denied allegations that its Snapdragon 810 system-on-chip overheats, claiming that both the chips were "very much cut from the same cloth".

The 810 also has higher ultra-HD video capabilities and an Adreno 430 GPU, as compared to the Adreno 418 GPU in the 808, making the 810 more expensive than the 808 chipset. This means that the use of the Snapdragon 810 system in the Moto X (3rd-Gen) could make the handset a bit more expensive.

There are no details about the release date of the Moto X (3rd-Gen), though it is expected to be unveiled by around September, as the Moto X (Gen 2) was also launched at the same time last year.
