"Mr. Robot" has managed to carve a hefty number of viewers and a devoted fan following for itself. Not only did it reel in rave reviews from critics, it also got nominated for several awards and even won a Golden Globe. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the series has been renewed for a second season, which most fans might already know by now.

But what can viewers expect from the upcoming season?

Speaking at the SXSW festival, creator Sam Esmail revealed that season 2 will take on the subject of privacy and, more specifically, data encryption. This comes in the wake of the Apple-FBI issue, which involves the government wanting to breach Apple's privacy policy by gaining access to an iPhone found at the San Bernardino shootings.

In this day and age, with technology playing a major part in everyone's daily lives, privacy is a key topic that is often discussed and taken to great lengths.

"What's weird is we're really going into thematically talking a lot about encryption and privacy, and this whole thing with Apple and Tim Cook happened, which I actually think is a really important issue that we're really going to get into in the next ten years or so," Esmail said.

The second season will also continue the plot points that were introduced in the first and the effects of Elliott's actions.

"Elliott committed a crime in the first season, and we're gonna see the ramifications of that in the second season, I think that drives a lot about what the second season's all about," Esmail revealed. "And really I think the second season is about [Elliott and Mr. Robot] — that internal struggle, what does that look like, and how are they going to reconcile it?"

Esmail also added that law enforcement will play a role in the upcoming season, which will give way to new story arcs and add a new dimension to the show. Grace Gummer, who is known for her roles in "The Newsroom" and "American Horror Story," has been cast as an FBI agent in the field who will look into the Evil Corp Hack.

Gummer joins new cast additions Chris Conroy, Joey Bada$$ and Craig Robinson.
