More than a month has passed since Netflix original's hit crime series "Narcos" released its second season. After its successful season 2 release, the series got a third and fourth season renewal right away. Here is what's known so far about the upcoming season 3.

According to reports, with Pablo Escobar dead, the fight for the war on drugs continues in season 3 with new kings of the trade. Netflix dropped a teaser trailer for season 3. It shows Escobar fading and Damian Alcazar and Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela surfacing. This means that the new focus would be the Cali Cartel. The infamous cartel was led by Gilberto and his two brothers Miguel and Pacho Herrera. They are known for their own brand of cocaine, which they smuggled to Colombia. Their cartel even got to merge with the Medellin Cartel.

Because season 3 was given the green light earlier than expected, production will be starting early as well. The series has already started filming the upcoming season.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Eric Newman talked about including Escobar in the story and introducing the Cali Cartel.

"We don't want to replace Pablo Escobar," he said. "We are going to look deeper into the systemic effects within Colombia of cocaine and corruption. Unlike Escobar, who had positioned himself as an outlaw, Cali was very much a part of the system. They had bought their way in and they enjoyed a different kind of protection than Pablo did. Pablo was protected by the people who loved him and Cali was protected by a political and economic system."

When asked if season 3 starts where season 2 left off or not, Newman said that the upcoming is more of a "schematic sequel." It will still talk about Escobar and how the authorities captured him, but the series will also talk about another cartel that is more favored by the government — the same government that locked Escobar in prison.

"Narcos" season 3 will come out in 2017.
