'NCIS: New Orleans' season 2 news: team gets new addition Shalita Grant; Daryl Mitchell becomes series regular

"NCIS: New Orleans" is back for a second season and is ready to solidify its standing in the "NCIS" universe. The Louisiana-based show's freshman season was promising, if a bit uneven with the characters and their interactions. But the cast and crew quickly established the right chemistry with its viewers and has hit the ground running with its premiere episode, "Sic Semper Tyrannis."

"NCIS: New Orleans" ended its first season with a cliffhanger of sorts. The team was able to stop a South African terrorist ring but was warned that there was a bigger terrorist storm on the horizon. That storm turned out to be a militia group that was able to steal a missile during a botched military exercise. Pride (Scott Bakula) and his team were able to save the day, as expected, but the head of this shadowy organization placed a big bounty on the "NCIS" leader's head.

According to "NCIS: New Orleans" showrunner, Jeffrey Lieber, this bounty on Pride's head will place him "in the crosshairs" of numerous people who want a crack at that prize. Lieber also talked at length about what's in store for the New Orleans agents in an interview he gave prior to the show's return. The screenwriter excitedly shared that the team will get bigger with the addition of Sonja Percy (Shalita Grant) to Pride's team and with Patton Plame (Daryl Mitchell), who has been promoted to series regular.

Fans were introduced to ATF undercover agent Percy last season and the feisty agent soon showed that she can hold her own, even against Pride and La Salle (Lucas Black). But her addition to the team also meant that Percy will have to adjust to working in a team. And as a probie, expect more pranks and jokes coming her way as Brody (Zoe McLellan) and La Salle try to test her mettle. Grant describes the new season as opening new depths when it comes to the team's relationships.

That does seem to be in tune to what Lieber also mentioned — that fans will learn more about the team members' back stories. Brody will allegedly have a big story arc this season when her mother arrives; La Salle is struggling with the death of his girlfriend while Pride tries to get his bar off the ground.

Episode two of "NCIS: New Orleans" season two will be aired on Sept. 29 on CBS.
