The Moto X Play might be the cheaper version of the flagship Moto X Style, but its design and hardware allow it to take on much bigger phablets like the Nexus 6, which was released last year. This is how these two phablets manufactured by Motorola fare in a comparison.

Design

When it comes to design, the Nexus 6, in spite of being the bigger device, is at a disadvantage as its metal frame and curved plastic back panel cannot be customized. In addition, it only has two options, white and blue. As for the Moto X Play, it also has a metal frame and a default plastic back panel but it can be customized extensively on the Moto Maker website. On the website, X Play users can choose from among the several metal accents, lenses and back panels available. With several different colors available, customers can create 196 design combinations for the device. They can even choose the back panel they want. The back panels available are wood, leather and silicone.

Display

The Nexus 6's display is definitely ahead as it has a sharper AMOLED capacitive screen measuring 5.96 inches with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels and a density of 493 pixels per inch. On the Moto X Play is a smaller 5.5-inch capacitive screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a density of 403 pixels per inch.

Specs

When it comes to hardware, both devices are equal as the Nexus 6 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset, coupled with a Krait 450 CPU with four cores clocked at 2.7 GHz and an Adreno 420 GPU and the Moto X Play has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset and an octa-core CPU comprised of four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7 GHz and four clocked at 1.0 GHz along with an Adreno 405 GPU.

Memory

There is no memory slot on the Nexus 6, therefore, external storage cannot be added. The version on the Moto X Play, however, allows for the addition of up to 128 GB. In terms of RAM, the Nexus 6 is ahead with 3 GB while the Moto X Play has 2 GB.

Camera

The Nexus 6 surges ahead as its 13 megapixel camera has optical image stabilization. The Moto X Play has a 21 megapixel camera, but it does not have OIS.

Battery

The Moto X Play's battery is 3630 mAh, making it superior to the Nexus 6's 3220 mAh battery.

Price

The Google Nexus 6 has a price tag of $149 with a two-year contract while the Moto X Play is expected to cost around $300, unlocked.
