'Penny Dreadful' season 4 rumors: spin-off series still possible?

(Facebook/PennyDreadfulonShowtime)The series finale of "Penny Dreadful" saw Vanessa's death.

"Penny Dreadful" fans have been suffering from withdrawal ever since the show's third season ended. It got even worse when creator John Logan confirmed there would be no season 4. However, rumors are running rampant that a spin-off may still be possible.

Rumors of a spin-off happening mostly stemmed from fans' desire to tie up the loose ends left in the season 3 finale. Even though it closed with Vanessa's (Eva Green) death, there are still questions about what happened to other beloved characters.

Despite Logan's decision to stop at a third season, many fans have taken to the Internet to express their dissatisfaction with the cancellation. Some have even started an online petition to revive the series or have Netflix pick it up for more seasons. However, even if Netflix or another entertainment giant picks up the show, it won't be the same since Logan has definitively ended the series in his mind.

"[The decision] was made a while ago. The show, to me, has always been about Vanessa Ives and her struggle with faith. I knew, sooner or later, it would get to a point of apotheosis, where she would either accept her God or deny her God," Logan explained to TVLine.

As for the possibility of continuing the series even without Vanessa, it seems impossible. "It just felt like the creative elements of this show are dependent on John Logan writing [for the character of] Vanessa Ives, and Eva Green playing Vanessa Ives. And I didn't want to make the show without the creative elements that made it great," Showtime president David Nevins told the publication in the same interview.

Logan has always envisioned to end the series with Vanessa's death. And truly, for a character who has struggled for so long, the closure that she was given seemed appropriate.

As for the rumors of a spin-off, since nothing has been confirmed, fans should take the news with a grain of salt.
