Portland Trail Blazers rumors: Back-up options for Lillard

It is no secret that the Portland Trail Blazers are in need of new players. Their starting five has been depleted with the sole exception of Damian Lillard.

A team considered to be one of the best in the future has now become a team under rebuilding with only a star point guard left to keep everything together.

They have tried to add some bits and pieces to the squad, but they are far from becoming the dark horse contenders they were considered to be.

However, what they should not forget is to find that perfect back-up point guard that can help Lillard when he needs to rest.

There are a few options available, but the question now is which road the Trail Blazers are willing to take.

One option is to try and improve the young talent that they have in Tim Frazier.

The NBA D-League's Most Valuable Player can be developed into a role for a perfect back-up for Lillard given Portland's strength in helping young talent.

He still needs to develop shooting and is relatively raw for the NBA, but shadowing Lillard should help him fill in the gap that the Blazers are currently having.

Frazier is showing signs of improvement in the Summer League and, should his form continue in the early stages of the coming season, he should be able to secure a job in the world's top league.

CJ McCollum can also be a viable option for the team, but he is more of a shooting guard more than anything and making him play a role he isn't comfortable with may only disrupt the flow of his game – ultimately messing up the cohesion of the team.

Now there are names in the free agency pool that can help the team moving forward.

Veterans like John Lucas III and Andre Miller are viable options who can play limited minutes while Lillard takes breaks.

Furthermore, they can help the squad's morale and help in developing the younger players to adapt to the different game the NBA offers.

If they are looking for younger talents, Norris Cole and Jimmer Fredette are also available at a good price.

Cole has the championship experience after playing with the Miami Heat but is now plying his trade with the New Orleans Hornets. He is a restricted free agent but giving him the right deal shouldn't be too hard to lure him into a different city.

Fredette is excellent if the Blazers are looking for a guard with a decent shooting touch from the outside.

For the Blazers, the list is not long but the names available are helpful for the squad moving forward.
