Samsung Galaxy S8 release date rumors: Flat-screen variants may not be coming next year

Next year's flagship offering from Samsung – the rumored Galaxy S8 – may be significantly different from models released in years past, mainly because of what its display could be.

Recently, Samsung executive Koh Dong-jin hinted that a big change could be coming to the company's smartphones in the form of the edge display, which is now being featured as the "identity" of the Galaxy S lineup, the Korea Herald reported.

The Samsung executive indicated that the move would be made if they found that going with the edge display could help provide users with better experiences.

The edge display, also known as the curved-screen display, is already prominently featured by the Galaxy Note 7, so user feedback related to that recently released device could impact what Samsung eventually decides to do with the Galaxy S8 and its own screen.

If the folks who bought the Note 7 respond well to the curved screens they are using now, then that could very well spell the end for flat-screen variants of other Samsung handhelds, including the S8 in all likelihood.

Aside from being curved, the display featured by the Galaxy S8 may also differ from older models in terms of the quality of images and videos it can present to users.

Just recently, a report from MyDrivers noted that Samsung's upcoming flagship offering may attempt to wow buyers with a new 4K display.

Combine 4K with curves and Samsung could really have something unique on their hands, though whether the public will respond well to those changes remains to be seen.

Other technological upgrades are also expected to be featured in the new Samsung flagship, though specific details about what they may be remain unavailable at this point.

It may be a while before people find out more official details about the Galaxy S8 as the upcoming flagship offering is not expected to make its debut until February of next year.
