'Sons of Anarchy' prequel update: Brad Pitt is rumored to play the lead role; Charlie Hunnam dropping out of 'Pacific Rim 2'

Although FX network is yet to announce any details about the "Sons of Anarchy" prequel, which is expected to happen during the show's reunion weekend in May, rumors have already surfaced that Charlie Hunnam is dropping his role in "Pacific Rim 2" in order to return as Jax Teller. Additionally, Brad Pitt is said to take John Teller's character, Jax's father.
The prequel will focus on the events that happen before Jackson "Jax" Teller's birth, specifically about his father, the founder of the outlawed motorcycle club SAMCRO. The rumor that Brad Pitt will take on the lead role is based on a year-old interview of Hunnam in the Men's Journal.
He told the publication at that time: "He's [show creator Kurt Sutter] trying to do a prequel, which I would love to see. Kurt is trying to get it going. Did you read that about Brad Pitt maybe playing my dad? Brad Pitt as John Teller. How awesome would that be."
Meanwhile, Hunnam himself is facing some project delays and controversies after the successful seven seasons of "Sons of Anarchy" had ended last year.
He has been in the news recently for being cast as Edgar Valdez Villarreal in the upcoming movie "American Drug Lord." He received backlash after the announcement of his role, further accusing Hollywood of whitewashing. Villarreal is a notorious Mexican-American drug lord whose story had been covered by Rolling Stone in 2011. Hunnam has kept mum about this controversy, though.
Hunnam dropped the offer for him to lead the romance film project, "The Mountain Between Us," which he would have played alongside Rosamund Pike. Idris Elba is expected to replace him as Ben Payne, the upcoming drama's protagonist.
Fans of the 35-year-old actor have yet to see him back on screen. His work on Guy Ritchie's "King Arthur" is expected to be released in February 2017.
