'Splatoon' latest news: Game director Hisashi Nogami hints at more DLC coming; rumors point to new amiibo figures on the way

"Splatoon" has helped rectify what is considered to be slowing sales for the Wii U gaming console. According to Nintendo's earnings report for 2015, "Splatoon," along with amiibo and "Super Mario Maker," has been one of the most successful releases of 2015. The ink-shooter game has sold 4.06 million units worldwide.
Along with successful sales, "Splatoon" is also well-received by critics and has merited predominantly favorable reviews since its release last May 2015.
Nintendo released the final downloadable content for the game last January. Just two weeks ago, players saw the arrival of the final Custom Hydra Splatling weapon and the final mapped called Ancho-V Games. However, with "Splatoon" shaping up to be one of Nintendo's best-selling titles, will Nintendo decide to release more content in the future?
"Splatoon" game director Hisashi Nogami recently made an appearance at the 2016 Splatoon Koshien Finals. In an emotional speech, he expressed his gratitude for the fans' support and the game's success. As a way of thanking fans, Nogami hinted on developing possible additional content for "Splatoon."
"We announced that updates to the game would end in January, but I'm starting to wonder if we can't organize a little something else," said Nogami (translation reported by Destructoid).
According to Game Spot, Nintendo previously announced that there would be no plans for paid downloadable content for "Splatoon." Thus, if Nintendo does release additional DLC, it will most likely be free for all players.
With the upcoming release of Nintendo's newest gaming console dubbed the NX, it is also possible that Nintendo will focus on developing a new "Splatoon" title for the new console.
There are also rumors circulating that Nintendo is planning to release "Splatoon" amiibo. According to Nintendo Life, a data miner called NWPlayer123 has uncovered evidence of the arrival of more amiibo figures. Based on these leaked files, the upcoming "Splatoon" amiibo are rumored to be Callie and Marie.
Nintendo has not released any official information regarding upcoming "Splatoon" amiibo, so readers should not take recent speculations as hard facts.
"Splatoon" is still available for purchase for the Nintendo Wii U.
