'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' news: Film's head of creature shop still unsure if BB-8 is a male robot or female droid
Ever since the beginning of the hit sci-fi film franchise "Star Wars," fans have not really been curious as to the gender of the droids in the movies — except for C3PO because it is quite obvious that he is male. However, as for the upcoming film "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," fans are now wondering if BB-8 is a female droid or a male robot like C3PO. Interestingly enough, even the production team is having trouble with the robot's gender.
During an intensive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Neal Scanlan, the head of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" creature shop, admitted that he is still not sure if BB-8 is a he or a she.
"I'm still not sure, dare I say, whether BB-8 is male or female," he said. "BB-8 was female in our eyes. And then he or she became male. And that's all part of the evolution, not only visually, but in the way they move, how they hold themselves."
Furthermore, according to EW, it was added on the statement that everyone involved in the movie has been referring to BB-8 as "he," which might point out that the droid might actually be a male instead of a female.
In addition to the gender confusion of BB-8, Scanlan also revealed that the droid is actually aware of how cute it is, something it uses to its own advantage.
"I think he knows he's cute. He knows that he can win people over," Scanlan added. "And he uses that like children do to get his own way. In this film, he has a very important mission that he has to accomplish and so he uses his personality, his coyness, and all of those things."
Sadly, the head of creature shop did not drop any more hints for BB-8's gender other than what he said. So for now though, it would be best for fans to just wait and find out if the droid is actually a male or female when "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hit cinemas this coming Dec. 18.
