'Steven Universe' season 3 premiere date and spoilers: Malachite to face off against a fusion of the three gems

(Facebook/StevenUniverse)The Steven Universe "In Too Deep" event will kick-off on May 12.

After an extended break, "Steven Universe" is set to return to Cartoon Network in May. Long-suffering fans are no doubt happy that they will soon be seeing Steven and his Gems embark on more adventures.

The return of Steven Universe will also start a four-week "In Too Deep" event that will last for five episodes. The event will kick off on May 12 with two episodes being aired back-to-back, followed by an episode a week for the next three weeks.

Cartoon Network released a trailer for the upcoming event that teases what Steven and the Gems will be facing, and it won't be pretty. The short clip unfolds with Steven and Peridot apparently having a picnic when the ground starts shaking. Amethyst, Garnet, and Pearl are then shown looking determined as Yellow Diamond says she wants "that planet to die."

One scene that will definitely get fans excited is that of Malachite slowly rising from the sea. The result of a fusion between Jasper and Lapis Lazuli, Malachite clearly has a score to settle with the Gems. She's still in chains but angrily vows that she will tear apart the gems. She's certainly given her chance as she's shown fighting Alexandrite, a gem that came about from the fusion of Amethyst, Garnet, and Pearl.

The trailer also shows Steven traveling underground with Peridot and admitting that something doesn't feel right. The clip ends with the young half-human wondering about a strange sound when a mysterious hand suddenly slams his window.

It's unclear whether the "In Too Deep" event heralds the start of "Steven Universe's" third season. There have been reports that the first episode of season 3 carries the title "Summer of Steven," information that people got from one of the show's writers, Matt Burnett. However, the Facebook community page for the show revealed that the first episode of the season is titled "Super Watermelon Island."

The post also revealed the titled of the five succeeding episodes — "Gem Drill," "Same Old World," "Barn Mates," "Hit the Diamond," and "Steven Floats."

However, fans know that the series also has a tendency to mix up the order of the episodes so they should expect more changes to happen. In the meantime, people should just be content in the knowledge that their favorite animation is back.

"Steven Universe: In Too Deep" is set to air on May 12.
