Surface Pro 3 vs. MacBook: MacBook rivals the redesigned Surface Pro 3

The Surface Pro 3 from Microsoft is the latest device in its premium laptop/tablet hybrid lineup and Microsoft believes that it can take on the recently released MacBook. Here is how the much affordable Pro 3 compares to the 2015 MacBook.

Design

The Surface Pro 3's body is made of magnesium while the MacBook has an aluminum unibody. As of height and length, the Pro 3 is slightly bigger, thicker and becomes much heavier than the MacBook when it is attached to its Type cover keyboard. As for colors, the Pro 3 comes only in silver while the MacBook has three options, silver, space grey and gold. A major difference between the devices is that the Surface Pro 3 has a touch screen and a Pen included while the MacBook is built like a laptop and does not have either.

Display

On the Pro 3 is a 12-inch display with a resolution of 2160 x 1440 pixels and a density of 216 pixels per inch while the MacBook has a 12-inch display with a resolution of 2304 x 1440 pixels and a density of 226 pixels per inch.

Specs

The MacBook comes with Intel Core M CPU with two cores. The laptop's speed, however, differs depending on the model. The lowest model starts at 1.1 GHz and goes all the way up to 2.6 GHz. As for the Pro 3, it comes equipped with an Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 chipset and is clocked at between 1.9 GHz to 3.3GHz.

Memory

The MacBook either has 256 or 512 GB of onboard storage while the Pro 3 starts at 64 GB and goes up to 512 GB. It also has a microSD slot which the Pro 3 lacks. As for RAM, the MacBook has 8 GB while the Surface Pro 3 has either 4 GB or 8 GB.

Price

In terms of price, the starting model of the MacBook is priced at $1300, while the 64 GB Surface Pro 3 with its keyboard included costs $930.
