'Switched at Birth' season 5 spoilers: The fight for black students' rights intensifies in campus

A special episode that will deal with the struggles of three African-American students will be aired when "Switched at Birth" returns on Tuesday.
In the trailer for the upcoming episode titled "Occupy Truth," the members of the Black Student Union appear to be very passionate about their fight to have the people responsible for the racial attacks be expelled from the campus.
One of the scenes shows Sharee (guest star Bianca Bethune) having a heart-to-heart talk with Bay's (Vanessa Marano) biological mother Regina (Constance Marie). Sharee shared all the painful experiences that she encountered because of her race. But Regina encouraged her to speak up because people will definitely listen to her woes.
On the other hand, Iris (Sharon Pierre-Louis) continues her hunger strike until the school board decides to make their move against the campus discrimination. But it seems like her strong conviction will take a toll on her health. Based on the trailer, Iris will pass out and lie unconscious on the floor.
Meanwhile, the synopsis for the episode also reveals that Chris (Sam Adegoke) will be caught in the middle of his desire to impress the baseball scouts in their upcoming game and his duty to fight for the black students' rights. But can he manage to succeed in both activities without sacrificing the other?
The focus on the racial discrimination theme was explained by series creator Lizzy Weiss in an interview with TVLine in January.
According to Weiss, they want to have African-Americans represented in their storyline even if they already tackle a lot of diversity on the show.
"It's woven into the first half of the season," the series creator stated. "We really tackle some stuff that, even though it's been 15 months since we wrote it, I've never seen tackled on TV, because I don't think there are any other shows that take place in college. It's something I'm really proud of and excited about and I hope causes a lot of conversations, particularly on college campuses."
The next episode of "Switched at Birth" season 5 will air on Freeform on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
