'The Big Bang Theory' season 10 spoilers: Aftermath of Alfred and Mary's hookup

(CBS)Season 10 picks up right after Alfred and Mary's nightcap.

Season 9 of hit comedy series "The Big Bang Theory" ended with an unconventional cliffhanger. The final episode ended quite abruptly in the midst of Penny and Leonard's pre-wedding dinner party. In the final moments, viewers found Leonard's father Alfred and Sheldon's mother Mary seemingly hooking up. Could this fateful relationship lead to Leonard and Sheldon becoming brothers?

"Leonard's father and Sheldon's mother, all they did was go off and have a nightcap and turn off their phones. I don't think there's any thoughts of those two actually getting married or running off to do anything like that. This is just an initial baby step in whatever that can be," showrunner Steve Molaro told The Hollywood Reporter.

While plans for season 10's premiere episode have yet to be finalized, Molaro has revealed that "The Big Bang Theory" will return just moments after Alfred and Mary's nightcap. Furthermore, the episode will also reveal what exactly happened during this alleged hookup.

While Molaro isn't sure if the premiere episode will show the wedding ceremony, it will definitely introduce new family members. Viewers will also have to see whether Alfred and Mary's relationship will complicate the special event.

The upcoming season will also continue to focus on the guidance system being developed by Leonard, Sheldon, and Howard. Other continuing storylines include Penny's unhappiness with her career as well as Howard and Bernadette's baby.

"There are a lot of pieces already in play that for now, we just want to continue with," Molaro added.'

Molaro also touched upon rumors of season 10 being the final season for "The Big Bang Theory." Rather than think about the series ending, Molaro prefers to make plans one episode at a time. Given that there will be 24 episodes in season 10, the cast and crew will still have a lot of stories to tell.

Season 10 of "The Big Bang Theory" returns this September. CBS has yet to release an official return date.
