'The Last of Us 2' release date, plot rumors: 2018 release possible; Ellie kills Joel?

(Facebook/Naughty Dog, LLC)It's a waiting game for "The Last of Us" fans as its sequel is still in limbo.

The fate of "The Last of Us 2" remains uncertain as developer Naughty Dog hasn't explicitly announced if Joel's and Ellie's story will continue. However, there are speculations that "The Last of Us 2" is happening, with an Easter egg found in another Naughty Dog title, "Uncharted 4."

Rumors are rife that the sequel to the horror survival game is possible after a "The Last of Us: American Daughters" poster was spotted in "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End." In it, a female character, who is believed to be Ellie, was seen to be pregnant and wearing a gas mask. However, as already explained in a report by FragHero, a Dark Horse Comics logo was also seen on the poster, suggesting that a new comic – not a game – would arrive. Still, there are speculations that the Easter egg hints at a new game.

Whether or not the teaser hints at the possible release of a sequel is anybody's guess but word has it that the game will indeed be released sometime in 2018. Also, the plot of the sequel may see a broken relationship between Joel and Ellie. According to ChattSportsNet, Joel might die and it's likely Ellie who's behind his death.

As one might recall from the previous game, Joel decided to hide the truth from Ellie so she could live. However, Ellie was willing to sacrifice herself to the rebel group Fireflies just so a cure could be found for the infection. Joel opposed of this and decided to fabricate a story just so Ellie won't have to die. It's possible that once Ellie finds out that Joel has been lying, she becomes angry to the point of killing him.

On the other hand, fans believe that this plot is unlikely as Ellie won't have it in her to kill Joel who has helped her survive. She, however, might threaten to kill him but won't go through with actually doing it.

Fans will just have to wait for further updates or until Naughty Dog makes the official announcement. At this point, the game is still in the rumor category.
