'The Last of Us 2' rumors: Ellie sent out on a mission to save captured Fireflies?

While there is no denying that the loudest rumor attached to "The Last of Us 2" is that Joel is possibly dead and only appears as a vision to Ellie, the latest reports claim that Ellie's fate in the highly anticipated game sequel may be likened to that of Theseus from the Greek mythology.
Eagle-eyed fans spotted a poster of the Greek mythology character Theseus at the1:48 mark of "The Last of Us 2 trailer. To the uninitiated, Theseus was the son of the ruler King Aegeus, who sent him on a mission to rescue the seven Athenian natives to be sacrificed to a Minotaur. In order to give his father an advance message that he succeeded in his mission, Theseus promised that his boat would return with white sails.
While it's true that Theseus succeeded in slaughtering the Minotaur, he forgot to change his sails to white when he returned home as he was brokenhearted after he fell in love with Ariadne while on a mission in Crete. Thinking that Theseus failed and was killed, the king killed himself as he jumped off a cliff.
Now, fans have found a way to connect Ellie to the said Greek mythology. Some believe that she may be likened to Theseus. However, instead of saving the Athenians, it is possible that Ellie was sent to save the rest of the Fireflies, who were abducted in the first game.
On the other hand, Joel is likened to the king who will eventually kill himself. As to what events will push Joel to end his own life, it remains unknown for now.
While the mentioned theory is nothing short of interesting, it is nothing but a speculation at this point in time. What is certain, though, is that the game will focus on hate, a clear contrast to the theme of the first "The Last of Us."
"If the first game was really about the love between these two characters, this story is the counter of that. This is story is about hate, through Ellie this time. The first game you play as Joel, this game you play as Ellie," Neil Druckmann, director of the game, said during the reveal of "The Last of Us 2" trailer at the PlayStation Experience event last December.
Naughty Dog has yet to announce the release date of "The Last of Us 2."
