'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 spoilers, cast news: Tristin Mays returns for last season

(Twitter / Tristin Mays)Sarah Salvatore, the only known living relative of Damon and Stefan, is going back to Mystical Falls for the last season of "The Vampire Diaries." The character is played by actress Tristin Mays.

The upcoming "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 will also serve as the series finale, and many characters from previous seasons are expected to return. Sarah Nelson will return to Mystic Falls, a role played by actress Tristin Mays.

Sarah was born a Salvatore as she is the biological daughter of Zach Salvatore (Chris William Martin), son of Stefan (Paul Wesley), and Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) half-brother. Zach was introduced in season 1 to kick off the arrival of the Salvatore brothers in Mystic Falls, but it was not until season 6 when the story of Sarah was made known.

During the season, she formed a friendly relationship with Matt (Zach Roerig) and a slightly romantic bond with Enzo (Michael Malarkey), who told her about the vampire world. He was also the last to see her go out of Mystic Falls.

Season 7 ended with Damon and Enzo under the possession of some evil creatures. The possession happened when they entered The Vault, which has been teased to contain "evil herself." Since she is related to both characters, some speculate that Sarah's return could play a part in saving them. Will she embrace the life she found out about and choose to stay away from? Will her return cause more conflicts in the relationship of Enzo and Bonnie (Kat Graham)?

An interview with Graham revealed how shooting for their final season feels. She said they are having so much fun, but at the same time, "We're feeling that nostalgia, we're already missing each other." When asked to describe the upcoming season's big bad she said, "The villain, as of right now, is this amazing female badass. It's going to be good."

More returning characters are expected to be revealed in the months leading to the show's return. "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 premieres on Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. on The CW network.
